Course Description
This training provides licensed mental health clinicians with current, evidence-based frameworks for suicide risk assessment, intervention, and clinical documentation. The session covers the epidemiology of suicidal behavior and structured assessment practice using validated instruments, including the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS), the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS) Suicide Status Form, and the SAFE-T protocol.
Participants will leave with practical, evidence-based tools for assessing and documenting suicide risk in a way that supports both clinical care and legal defensibility.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this training, attendees will be able to:
Apply current evidence-based suicide risk assessment frameworks, including the Columbia Protocol (C-SSRS) and the Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality (CAMS).
Identify acute and chronic risk factors, protective factors, and warning signs using a biopsychosocial-cultural lens.
Construct legally sound, clinically thorough risk documentation that reflects the standard of care.
Distinguish between static and dynamic risk factors and apply that distinction to treatment planning and documentation.

This training is delivered via an online platform and may not fully replicate the interactivity of in-person learning experiences. Participants may encounter discomfort as they explore sensitive topics or are asked to challenge existing beliefs and practices, and discussion of suicide and suicide prevention can be triggering for some attendees.

This training presents foundational, introductory-level content on suicide risk assessment and prevention. The session covers evidence-based intervention and treatment methods relevant to the topic, including structured, validated risk assessment tools and clinical documentation practices.

This training addresses ethical responsibilities and standards as outlined in the NASW Code of Ethics. It is relevant to professionals across mental health disciplines, including licensed social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists.
About the Presenter
Monica Ashton, LCSW, PMH-C, CST, is Chief Operations Officer at The Healing Group and has worked in the mental health field for over twenty years. She is a leading Utah expert in perinatal, sexual, and reproductive mental health, supporting individuals and couples through fertility challenges, pregnancy, reproductive loss, postpartum depression and anxiety, and sexual health concerns. Monica holds a Master of Social Work with a Clinical and Medical emphasis from the University of Utah and a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Brigham Young University. She is an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist and a Certified Perinatal Mental Health Professional (PMH-C), with postgraduate training including Karen Kleiman's Practitioner and Advanced Practitioner trainings and the Mind/Body Infertility Training at Boston IVF. She is licensed to practice in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Hawaii, and Minnesota, and previously worked as a crisis and trauma clinician at University Hospital.
