Course Description
This training equips clinical mental health providers with a clear understanding of the clinical presentation of perinatal anxiety and foundational strategies for supporting clients through it. Participants will explore evidence-based approaches to assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment, with the goal of increasing attendees' confidence, knowledge, and competence in identifying, assessing, differentiating, and treating perinatal anxiety. Clinicians will leave with an increased ability to provide competent, compassionate care to individuals during the perinatal period.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this training, attendees will be able to:
Identify the signs, symptoms, risk factors, and diagnostic features of perinatal anxiety.
Assess perinatal anxiety and differentiate it from other perinatal mental health conditions.
Apply evidence-based interventions to support clients experiencing perinatal anxiety.
Limitations, Risks, & Benefits
This training presents a limited amount of information and is not intended to be comprehensive; clinicians who desire additional depth are encouraged to seek out supplemental resources and peer-reviewed literature on this topic. Delivered via an online platform, the training carries no anticipated risks beyond those typically associated with online learning environments, though it may not fully replicate the interactivity of an in-person experience. Participants may encounter discomfort as they explore sensitive topics, challenge existing beliefs and practices, or take part in interactive discussion. Benefits include foundational knowledge and practical skills that build on attendees' existing training, along with an increased ability to apply this knowledge in professional practice while promoting compassionate, inclusive care.
Cultural Sensitivity
This training incorporates case examples, scenarios, and discussion that reflect diverse populations and lived experiences, and addresses how systemic inequities and social determinants of health may impact the perinatal populations participants serve.
Course Content
This training presents foundational, introductory-level content on the clinical presentation and treatment of perinatal anxiety. It covers evidence-based assessment and intervention methods, is grounded in current research and peer-reviewed literature, and incorporates content related to trauma-informed approaches given the frequent intersection of perinatal anxiety with prior trauma. The session is delivered through lecture and didactic instruction, large group discussion, and a live question-and-answer session with the presenter.
Relevance
This training addresses content directly applicable to clinical practice, including the assessment, differentiation, and treatment planning of perinatal anxiety. It builds on foundational knowledge gained through a completed graduate-level degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a related mental health field, and addresses content relevant to working with individuals throughout the perinatal period. It is relevant to professionals across mental health disciplines, including licensed social workers, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, and marriage and family therapists.
